Upon the introduction of photography into India, court painters in northwest India responded to changing tastes by incorporating the new medium's visual sensibility into royal portraiture. While seated portraits of rulers have a longer history, the composition and European furniture are evidence of a shift in the taste of royal patrons interested in new modes of self-presentation.
