The shape, glaze, and dark clay body of this bowl echo early Karatsu ware. The decoration of pine boughs--rendered in iron and cobalt against “clouds” of white slip (clay solution)--was, however, inspired by designs of the Kyoto potter Ogata Kenzan (1663–1743). Hybrid “quotations” from historical ceramic modes were common in Kyoto workshops in the nineteenth century.
