A serious conversation between a middle aged man and woman and a young girl. They are sitting on couches in a living room with a messy coffee table.

The Day After

Sunday, December 3, 2017, 1 PM

Talk about a rough first day at work. When Areum (The Handmaiden’s Kim Min-hee) starts her job as an assistant to publisher Bongwan (Korean TV star Kwon Hae-hyo), his wife immediately accuses her of having an affair with him. In fact, Bongwan recently broke off an affair with Areum’s predecessor and seems to be grooming her as his next conquest. It almost goes without saying that this is a film by Hong Sang-soo, Korea’s prolific master of the intellectual romantic comedy. Sporting his usual mix of witty dialogue, sly narrative trickery, and wonderful acting, Hong’s latest gem effortlessly balances the farcical with the bittersweet. (Dir.: Hong Sang-soo, Korea, 2017, 92 min., B&W, DCP, Korean with English subtitles)
