Winners of a 2017 Grammy Award for chamber music, this Chicago-based quartet performs Resounding Earth, Augusta Read Thomas’s epic work for one hundred Asian bells. Hear this entrancing piece in the resonant commons of the Smithsonian’s medieval-inspired stone “castle,” next door to the Freer|Sackler. Also on the program are Glenn Kotche’s Wild Sound, Isaac Schankler’s Blindnesses, and Steve Reich’s Mallet Quartet. Third Coast Percussion won the 2017 Grammy for best chamber music/small ensemble performance with their album Third Coast Percussion | Steve Reich, released on Cedille Records. Composer Augusta Read Thomas received a Grammy Award in 2011 for the recording of her choral music by Chanticleer.
