Gerardo Ballesteros

I am a senior at Wheaton High School in Silver Spring, Maryland, where I participate in the Engineering Magnet Program and the Global Studies Academy. Outside of the classroom, I’ve helped start a number of clubs related to my passions for photography, jazz saxophone, and entrepreneurship. I also served on the High School Youth Council for Asian American LEAD. My hobbies include tailoring clothes, traveling, and playing for my school’s tennis team in the spring.

Maria Mendoza Blanco

I am a junior at George C. Marshall High School in Falls Church, Virginia. I’ve painted for the last six years, including one year of working in oils. (One of my paintings was featured in the New York Times.) I am an officer of my school’s National Art Honor Society chapter, and I am currently working on a project to paint a mural with ESOL kids at my local elementary school. Asian art has been an important influence on my own art, and the Freer|Sackler helped me discover it. I hope to help others discover it, too.

I am very excited to be a member of the Freer|Sackler Teen Council this year!

I also participate in our Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) club, our school newspaper the Tide, the National Art Honor Society, and the National Chinese Honor Society. I am bilingual (I can speak Chinese). In my free time I like to go thrifting, watch YouTube videos, drink way too much coffee, and read webtoons. One of my favorite hobbies is revamping and collecting vintage clothes.

Ivvone Zhou

I’m a junior at Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, Maryland, where I help run the Mural Club, participate in Biology Club, and try to manage my STEM-centric course load.
