Malibu Woman was selected by the artist as a gift to the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery on the occasion of the exhibition of Paintings by Masami Teroaka held at the Sackler (June 1996-January 1997).
The painting features the image of a pensive woman tearing open a condom wrapper with her teeth. Japanese characters at the right of the painting read: "My boyfriend doesn't like to use condoms."
Teroaka, at the peak of his career, offers in Malibu Woman technical bravura and a sharply distilled image. Issues of sexuality, the blend and clash of Japanese and Western cultures, the overlay of Western pop art style with fragments of nineteenth century woodblock print references are presented in this painting with an economy of means that reenforces visual effect.
