This strikingly luminous image was created by applying gesso to woodblocks to create textures before cutting through and printing with oil-based colors, which were popular with Japanese artists in the post-war period. Highly saturated water colors are added like the dyes to soak into the paper in areas where there is no oil-based pigment to act as a resist.
