Dr. Willard J. Sutton (1895-1970) excavated at Te-hura [Dehua], China [1]By 1951
Freer Gallery of Art, Study Collection, likely acquired by John A. Pope (1906-1982) from Dr. Willard J. Sutton [2]Notes:
[1] Dr. Willard J. Sutton was an American-born chemistry professor who worked at the Fukien Christian University. He did work for the Fujian government, studying Dehua porcelain. See Study Collection Catalogue Card, copy in object file. The catalogue card indicates that Sutton "excavated" the sherd in "Te-hua in 1935" and he found it "4 ft. underground."
[2] See catalogue card cited in note 1. No year appears on the inventory card, but the card is within the series of objects acquired by John A. Pope for the Freer Study Collection in 1951.
