Fragment of the neck and shoulder of a large jar

Shape: Fragment of the neck and shoulder of a large jar. Thickness of the jar walls varies from 0.3 to 0.5 cm. Wheel thrown.

Clay: The body of the jar is a pinkish peach color with many relatively coarse, mostly white inclusions. A cross-section of the neck portion of the fragment reveals an abrupt transition in body color. A narrow band of dark body material is sandwiched between two layers of the pinkish peach material.

Glaze: The body is covered with relatively thick white coating which may represent a slip but is more likely a severely underfired celadon glaze. The glaze/slip extends down the throat of the jar to the point where the throat curve begins its transition to the shoulder.

Decoration: A reclining “S”-shaped ornament is appliqued at the line where the curve of the neck reverses direction to begin the curve of the shoulder. The ornament is unglazed and was fastened to the jar after the glaze/slip was applied. The center of one of the two whorls on the the reclining “S” ornament is filled with glaze/slip material.
