These intricate margin designs have been attributed to the Persian painter Aqa Mirak. Active in the first half of the sixteenth century, he was one of the leading artists at the court of the Safavid ruler, Shah Tahmasp (ruled 1524-76) at Tabriz in northwestern Iran. Much admired for his bold compositions and subtle use of color, Aqa Mirak also devised manuscript borders that were regarded as the finest examples of this greatly revered art form.
