When Japanese women of high status married, their families commissioned beautiful sets of lacquered boxes and small furniture for their new homes. This set was made for a bride of the Tokugawa family, close relatives of the shoguns. This box and stand are richly embellished with applied gold foil and flakes of gold embedded in amber-toned lacquer.
