Square plate with four legs. Low raised sides with flat rim and indented corners, following a lacquer prototype. Formed over a mold, with signs of smoothing on unglazed base. Slightly warped in firing. Four molded cabriole legs applied at four corners and completely glazed. To each side of leg attachment, sandy adhesions suggesting locations of spurs that supported plate for firing. Tip of one leg ground off.
Clay: porcelain; gray-white, with some orange flushing at edges of glazed areas.
Glaze: clear. Distinct bluish cast on flat rim and feet, possibly intended to be a green ("celadon") glaze. Some grit adhering to front of plate. Back of plate unglazed.
Decoration: in underglaze cobalt, intense blue color, appearing gray in a few places. Design rendered in thin lines and washes in light, medium, and dark tones. In bottom of dish, central motif of large carp twisting its way through tangles of seaweed, against ground of "water" pattern rendered as undulating parallel lines. On inside of walls, overall lattice, variant of kikko (tortoise shell) pattern, under medium-blue wash, with lotus flower in each corner and spiky-petalled chysanthemums at center of each side. On outside of walls, abstract motifs of clouds above waves. Dot of cobalt at tip of each foot.
Mark: not marked.
