This type of censer, with its raised flanges, is modeled after the ancient bronze vessel form li and was a popular Longquan item. The intended market included Chinese scholars who appreciated archaistic styles of ceramic vessels. Many examples were also shipped to Japan, where they became prized objects in Buddhist temples and warrior households.
