Red Baraat energizes the Freer|Sackler’s reopening with their gut-busting fusion of jazz, hip-hop beats, rock muscle, funky go-go, and scalding hot bhangra. At 5:30 pm on Saturday, the band will lead a processional outside the museums, followed by a full set at 11 pm and another at 1:30 pm on Sunday.
Led by dhol drummer and composer Sunny Jain, the Brooklyn-based band can mesmerize an audience with a funk groove, turn a switch, and drive the same crowd to the brink of delirium. Since its formation in 2008, the band has taken its magic far beyond New York City. Their second studio album in 2013, Shruggy Ji, debuted at number one on the Billboard world music charts and propelled them on a nonstop three-year world tour. Their third studio album, Bhangra Pirates, was released in March 2017 and, as Jain describes it, “embodies that push and pull in all of us . . . free spirit, community, rebellion, tradition, and new journeys.”
