Performance: Musicians from Marlboro II

Thursday, March 21, 2019, 7:30 PM

Purcell’s Chacony in G Minor inspired the third movement of Britten’s luminous second string quartet, written to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Purcell’s death. In turn, Britten’s work forms the basis of this concert, which also includes Haydn’s Divertimento in G and Dvorak’s inimitably joyous string sextet, a perennial Marlboro favorite. Performing are violinists Anna Lee and Alexi Kenney, violinist/violist Luosha Fang, violist Hsin-Yun Huang, and cellists Sujin Lee and Judith Serkin.

The Washington Post wrote of a previous Marlboro concert at the Freer, “What, exactly, are they putting in the water at the Marlboro Music Festival? Not only is the virtuosity of Musicians from Marlboro . . . consistently jaw-dropping, but the freshness, rich imagination and sheer vitality of their playing is enough to make even the most jaded concertgoer edge to the front of his seat.”
