Making Arab Melodies: Hamid Al-Saadi and Safaafir

Sunday, March 10, 2019, 3 PM

Learn how Arab melodic modes, called maqams, are used when interpreting classic Arab poetry and reciting Qur’anic verses. Each maqam is intended to evoke a particular mood, desire, and setting. Skillful composers choose from a dozen or more of these modes when setting lyrics to music. Iraqi vocalist Hamid Al-Saadi and the Safaafir trio will demonstrate and explain the rudiments of the maqam system and perform samples of lyrics in the Baghdadi style.
