Winner of the best film, best director, and best supporting actress prizes at this year’s Hong Kong Film Awards, Our Time Will Come brings to life the resistance movement that arose when Japan occupied the island during World War II. Its story centers on legendary revolutionary Fang Lan (Zhou Xun), as she changes from humble schoolteacher to a prime mover in the movement. One of “China’s cinematic treasures” (Andy Webster, New York Times), director Ann Hui was a major figure in Hong Kong’s ‘80s and ‘90s new wave movement. Her latest film shows how the richness, depth, and political commitment of her work have evolved over the years. A restoration of her debut film The Secret plays on August 5. (Dir.: Ann Hui, China/Hong Kong, 2017, 130 min., DCP, Cantonese and Japanese with Chinese and English subtitles)
