The directorial debut of actor Abed Abest carries on the experimental, envelope-pushing spirit of Fish & Cat and Invasion, his collaborations with the inventive filmmaker Shahram Mokri. Abest’s film unfolds in reverse chronological order, in a completely black space decorated only with bright-green furniture. Using this Brechtian deliberate artifice, Simulation examines what went wrong when three drunk young men showed up at an enigmatic older acquaintance’s home unannounced. This challenging but rewarding film illustrates how a generation of Iranian filmmakers are using unconventional formal methods to critique their country’s politics and history. (Dir.: Abed Abest, Iran, 2017, 85 min., DCP, Persian with English subtitles)
