Iran’s official 2018 Oscar entry is the bittersweet tale of a book-loving girl growing up during the Iranian Revolution and the subsequent Iran-Iraq War. In Breath, set in the culturally rich Yazd region, this plucky young heroine spins the travails of her working-class family into the folktales and legends that she loves. Narges Abyar, who won the Best Director award for this film at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, depicts Bahar’s imaginary world with exquisite animated vignettes that evoke traditional Persian art and calligraphy. (Dir.: Narges Abyar, Iran, 2016, 112 min., DCP, Persian with English subtitles)
