Watch the trailer.

This year’s festival kicks off with an appearance by renowned Iranian actress and director Niki Karimi. She “gives one of her finest, most mature performances” (Deborah Young, Hollywood Reporter) in this drama, which was a favorite at the Venice International Film Festival and top-prize winner at the Reykjavik International Film Festival. A newspaper ad promising 30 million tomans (approximately $10,000) to those in need draws a huge crowd to a Tehran office building on the titular date. Director Vahid Jalilvand tells the stories of three characters: Leila (Karimi), who needs the money to help her paraplegic husband; Setareh (an equally outstanding Sahar Ahmadpour), who wants to bail her husband out of jail; and the mysterious benefactor himself. (Dir.: Vahid Jalilvand, Iran, 2015, 102 min., DCP, Persian with English subtitles)
