The fourth movie he’s made in defiance of the Iranian government’s filmmaking ban won Jafar Panahi (The White Balloon, Crimson Gold, Taxi) the best screenplay award at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. 3 Faces is a touching tribute to road movies by Panahi’s late mentor, Abbas Kiarostami. Playing fictionalized versions of themselves, Panahi and famous actress Behnaz Jafari trek to Iran’s mountainous northwest to investigate a video of a teenage girl apparently committing suicide. The Hollywood Reporter’s Deborah Young calls the film “charming Iranian cinema at its purest” and “defiantly modern in its liberal message about freedom of choice.” (Dir.: Jafar Panahi, Iran, 2018, 100 min., DCP, Persian with English subtitles)
