Entertainment for an Empress: Shanghai Kunqu Troupe

Get a taste of classical Chinese music-drama (kunqu) in two short excerpts performed by the Shanghai Kunqu Troupe, featuring full costumes, live music, and English and Chinese surtitles. At 1 pm, the group performs “The Interrupted Dream,” a key episode from the famous kunqu play The Peony Pavilion, which explores loneliness, love, dreams, and reincarnation in Ming dynasty China. At 3:30 pm, watch scenes from The Butterfly’s Dream, which tells the legend of third-century Taoist philosopher Chuang-tzu, his lonely wife, and his outlandish plots to test her loyalty.
