Arab-Latin-Jazz Fusions: Simon Shaheen and Qantara

Enjoy a unique blend of invigorating music from the worlds of jazz, Latin, and Arab traditions. Joining violinist and ‘ud (Arab lute) virtuoso Simon Shaheen is a genre-crossing ensemble on ney (bamboo flute), qanun (Arab zither), Western flute, saxophone, double bass, and a variety of world percussion instruments.

Shaheen has long been a major force in Arab music as composer, performer, and educator. He is a National Endowment for the Arts Heritage Fellow, America’s highest honor in the traditional arts. 

Presented as part of the Smithsonian’s Summer Solstice celebration and the citywide By the People festival.
