Material tells us a great deal about Southeast Asian objects. Heavy, stone sculptures were typically architectural elements or figures designed as permanent fixtures. By contrast, bronzes were portable objects that could be carried, sometimes across great distances. Ceramics were used in a range of contexts, from domestic and ceremonial to transport and trade. Today, photographs convey artists’ encounters with ancient sites and landscapes.
